Clinical review of the impacts of hepatitis C

The clinical review of the impacts of hepatitis C was carried out on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The review group, led by Professor David Goldberg of Health Protection Scotland, looked at the mental and physical impacts of chronic hepatitis C (HCV).

Findings and recommendations

The review found evidence that HCV has a negative impact on mental health, recommending that Scottish Infected Blood Support Scheme (SIBBS) beneficiaries should qualify for an annual payment based on their own assessment of the impact of HCV on their life.

The review found limited evidence of physical health impacts of chronic HCV, although did find evidence that those with chronic HCV are at increased risk of renal disease due to Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (MPGN), recommending that any SIBSS beneficiaries affected by this should in future qualify for advanced HCV payments.

The group considered international evidence on the physical and mental health impacts of HCV, alongside data about and interviews with SIBSS beneficiaries.
