Furthering support for Scottish businesses

NSS National Procurement’s latest order with Dumfriesshire-based Alpha Solway will secure a sustainable Scottish supply of PPE masks and visors until summer 2021.

Since the start of Scotland’s COVID-19 response, Scottish Government, NHS National Services Scotland, and Scottish Enterprise have been working in partnership to put strong foundations in place to further strengthen Scotland’s supply chain and resilience.

The results of this over these last number of months have seen the ‘can do’ attitude of Scotland’s business communities come forward to create, innovate, and grow supply routes for critical supplies to support health and social care in Scotland.

Alpha Solway based in Annan, Dumfriesshire, has from the early phases of the pandemic, been one of those companies. To date, it has innovated its manufacturing to supply a range of critical supplies to NHSScotland. Now, thanks to manufacturing efforts to grow capabilities, Alpha Solway – from September – will be manufacturing enough supply across Type IIR masks (232 million), and visors (two million) to meet demand for Scotland’s health and social care sectors until summer 2021.

Alpha Solway will also be making an additional six million FFP3 respirator masks which will meet around 87% of Scotland’s health and social care needs over this same time period.
This latest order which equates to an investment of £53million, has been secured through national supplier Arco, of whom Alpha Solway are a sub-contractor.
This latest order will also support around 200 additional jobs and continues NSS National Procurement’s efforts to grow strong supply foundations closer to home that is further strengthening Scotland’s supply chain and resilience.
