Home oxygen service: improving patient care

The Health Facilities Scotland Home Oxygen Service works to ensure that patients who require oxygen in their home, are provided with a reliable year-round service.

Improving Patient Care

The team work alongside the contractor Dolby Vivisol to provide support to health boards, and ensure each patient receives tailored care which best meets their needs.

Margaret (pictured), from Glasgow was prescribed ambulatory oxygen cylinders, which she transported in a personal shopping trolley to get out and about. She thought she was unable to travel by bus with her oxygen cylinders, so walked to her local supermarket which was a considerable distance away from her home.

Partnership Working

Working in partnership, her Respiratory Nurse in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and her Home Oxygen Service team carried out a joint assessment to find out if there was a simpler solution for Margaret. The two teams worked collaboratively to combine their clinical and technical expertise during the home assessment and were able to offer Margaret a lightweight portable oxygen concentrator, which she can carry over her shoulder. Margaret says that this has had a big impact on her life and made it considerably easier.

By working together, the teams are continuing to find the best solutions for individual patients and their families, to improve their quality of life.
